Can better cars make us worse drivers?

Driving down a road can give a relaxing feeling. However, operating a vehicle does carry responsibility. Car-related danger occurs when safer benefits do not outweigh risks. Many people are worried about their safety when driving. They demand safer cars for themselves. For instance, a major head injury suffered in a car accident can lead to long-term brain damage. In 1975, Sam Peltzman, an University of Chicago economist, theorized that automotive accident rates did not change much after national auto safety regulations were created. Some automobile driver felt that they had more protection and drove in a risky manner.

Mr. Peltzman explained bike cyclists, pedestrians and other drivers experienced greater accident risks when drivers did not operate safely. Recent studies show better safety laws have protected others on the road. The Peltzman Effect, named after Mr. Peltzman, has not been easy to prove. Other factors may explain car safety and driver behavior. During 2007, two university economists worked with NASCAR. They reviewed racetrack safety data, ranging from 1972 to 1993. The economists determined that racers drove faster along the racetrack.

What Happens to Non-NASCAR Drivers

Car drivers who are non-NASCAR are not compensated with racetrack prize money. These drivers must turn to obtaining the cheapest car insurance when they have effective car safety devices. Some of these devices include anti-lock braking and sturdier seat belts. Other safety devices include four-wheel drive and strong snow tires. Drivers who face risky drivers should practice better safety techniques. They can learn to survive accidents no matter what technology does or does not exists.

The university researchers noticed that SUVs had 2.7 times the amount of car accidents as normal. Today, researchers are investigating different safety car devices, such as semiautomated safety devices. In addition, researchers are now starting to find that semiautomated safety devices.
